Hi Marcus,
You ask a good question, but the answer, of course, is personal. I think that's where setting standards that you believe are necessary--which I mentioned in the post--comes in. Every parent sets standards and in every realm. In my own house, if I had a child who loved jello, I would involve the child in making "jello" out of fruit juice and using natural kuzu and agar to make it gel (a dessert called "kanten"). When it comes to personalizing food choices, I happen to have children who lean toward meat and children who lean away from it--as I happen to. These natural preferences need to be respected to the extent they can be, and my own contribution in these cases is on larger issues of balance and quality. I hope that helps.

do you believe in making accomodations for children's specific "orientations?" For example, if one child has naturally healthy orientation and another gravitates towards starchy/sugary foods-how would you accomodate, and to what degree? Limited autonomy makes sense in the context of providing healthy options, but what if the second child in my example is contantly rejecting what is proferred and prefers "jello"?
